In the article "Spotlight: 'Aren't you a nurse?'" written by Linda Childers, Childers describes the gender stereotypes of female in the medical field, and the effects they have on women.
In the article Childer states, "Stereotypes aren't just annoying- they can also affect a [medical] students academic performance. In a recent University of British Columbia study published in the Oct. 20, 2006, issue of Science, Women who are told that men were better equipped, genetically, to solve math problems performed worse on tests than women not exposed to this notion." This being said, it proves that stereotypes do influence people and their productivity. In this particular study, exposing women to certain stereotypes cause them to become overly confident and they don't try as hard on the "exam" and it hinders their scores. They don't try as hard because they don't think they have anything to prove. However, if stereotypes were to be disproved of women would work better.
In the article Childer also states, "Perhaps the biggest challenge for female medical students and residents is proving to their peers that they are capable of successfully balancing work and family. Unfortunately, women in medicine say that often have to demonstrate proof that they are capable of this juggling act- one that for women in other professions receives little attention." However, trying to prove this stereotype often shields even themselves from the reality that they need help, and its ok, but trying to prove their capable hinders their abilities because they are spending so much time trying to perfectly balance things that are not meant to be perfectly in balance by one person.
In the article Childer also states, "While the Journal Academic Medicine notes that the number of female medical students has increased from 7.7 percent in 1964 to 48.5 percent in 2005, many women in medicine continue to face gender stereotypes and subtle discrimination." Fighting what people say should define them, women stand up to the everyday stereotypes, and get the education they need to become things such as doctors, lawyers, and sheriffs, despite the fact that almost everyone around them are creating and supporting the stereotypes that these women are standing up to.
In conclusion we learn that women face many stereotypes in the medical field, yet there is still an astonishing percent of females becoming doctors, despite the discrimination.

In the article "Women in Medicine: Gender, mentors and role models" by Katherine Ellington, Ellington informs the reader of the negative and positive stereotypes of being a female doctor.
In the article Ellington states, "Recent research published by doctor Dr. Borges and others indicates that women physicians choose their careers because of the perceived quality of life, earning potential, and organizational reward. They are less likely than men to identify role models for professional- personal balance." Women choose to be doctors because they are trying to prove themselves in a "mans world". Until recently most people did not think that a women had what it takes to become a doctor, and that the only reason they were interested was because of the money, and the appreciation from others.
Elligton also states, "Relationships and family matter, try to avoid undermining your anchors to move ahead, you may find short-term success and long-term misery with the loss of your family and friends any a more demanding job." Here we see the negative stereotype that women with children cant focus right and that having a family makes their job harder, this may be true, but I believe that this is not just true with women in the medical field, but with women in any profession, however; it is not as big of an issue with other professions than it is in the medical field. Women who have families may have a harder time focusing on the task at hand because of worrying for their family.
While both of those stereotypes are some what on the negative side Elligton also tells of the positive side, she states, "On a historical note Dr. Virginia Apgar's story is endearing as she was set on becoming a surgeon, but gender discrimination led her to a career in anesthesiology after training she went on to head a new division of anesthesiology where she developed the Apgar score." That is proof that even though women face some discrimination in the medical field if they work hard you can overcome the negativity thrown at them by others.
This article reminds me of the time I was discriminated against at work when I wanted to work in the kitchen instead of being a Car-Hop. I remember when I told my boss and the "Kitchen Boys" started saying things like why don't you stay up front where you belong, and you can't be a grill worker you're a girl.. hearing comments like that almost made me change my mind but i decided to go after what i wanted anyways. After the first two weeks of learning the things in the kitchen the boys finally got used to me being there and within the next few weeks they even started to tell me how good I was doing! This is proof that if you set your heart to something you can over come any negativity someone may throw at you.
Should women become doctors? I think that if thats what they really want to do then no matter how much negativity is thrown there way.

Book Review
“Just as he reached for my neck, I tased him. I was there to bag and tag, not to
kill. Besides, if I had to carry separate weapons for every paranormal I took
out, I'd be dragging around a full luggage set. Tasers are a one-size-fits-all
paranormal butt-kicking option. Mine's pink with rhinestones. Tasey and I have
had a lot of good times together.” In the book Paranomalcy Evie, a teenage girl, is just your typical teenager.. or so it seems. She has homework, a bestfriend, and even boy troubles, however; Evie is working for an agency to catch paranormal creatures. Kiersten White's Paranomalcy captivated me with its perfect blend of humor and grave situations.
In the book Paranormalcy, Evelyn, or Evie for short, is a teenage girl living in The Center, an International Paranormal Containment Agency (IPCA), helping the agency catch paranormal creatures. When Evie was eight she was walking through the park on her way to the library when she was approached by a vampire who was disguised as a man, the IPCA was already on the scene about to capture the vampire when they realized that Evie could see through the mans disguise- something no normal human could do, they soon took Evie to live at the Center to help them capture paranormals. Besides the fact that she hunts paranormals Evie is like most any other teenager, shes got homework(although shes home schooled), shes got a bestfriend named Lish, shes a mermaid, and she even has boy troubles. Evie has a sarcastic outlook on life to help her deal with the craziness of the paranormal world. Evie puts all her trust into Requel, the head of the Center, and since she never knew her mom looks to her as a mother figure. Evie's personality is just awesome, shes sarcastic, witty, and just down right cool. I liked Evie's character and that just made the book ten times better, after all she is the main person in the book.
The setting in Paranomalcy takes place in Canada, where the Center is located, the Center is, as described by Evie, a cold and lonely place for a teenage girl. Things at the Center never really change; that is until Lend, a paranormal teenager, breaks in. At first Evie is frightful of this unknown creature but as she talks to him, against Requel's wishes, she learns that he isn't much different from her. She even starts to develop feelings for him. After Lend broke into the Center he is put into custody and he tells IPCA officials of shocking news that something is killing Paranormals and is heading their way, Requel assures Evie that the Center is safe and that nothing will happen, however; when the paranormal killer gains access to the Center and begins killing, Evie frees Lend and he takes her to his home in Virginia, where they enlist the help of Lends human father, paranormal mother, a vampire, and a couple of werewolves. Evie spends the remainder of the book in Virginia where she enrolls in school, starts dating Lend, and even goes to an actual prom. Evie starts to think that her life is actually becoming normal until she learns that the paranormal killer is her sister and her ex-boy friend, Reth who is a faerie, shows up and tells Evie that she is in danger.
This book kinda reminds me of the House of Night series, in both books the leading character is a strong independent female who is not exactly like everyone else but not so different either. Both characters are just normal teenagers whose lives are turned upside down in a matter of days, they both face challenges that most normal teenagers face such as boys, friends, and school all while having to deal with paranormal life also. In both the House of Night and Paranormalcy the leading character puts her trust in the wrong person, in both cases it happens to be the mother figures.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good drama filled thriller and wants to be kept on their toes.

In a recent article by Denise Witmer entitled, In a recent article by Denise Witmer entitled, 5 steps to good decision making skills for teens, she tells her readers of the steps you can take to make a good decision.
In the article Denise tells the readers that, "whether or not to 'get a job,' 'start smoking,' 'use drugs,' 'start dating'.. Are decision that teenagers have to make everyday." It's had to make decisions when you have a million different people telling you a million different things; however, with Denise's simple decision making steps it's easy to block out the peer pressure and think of what's right do you.

This article reminded me of the time my parents sat me down and told me it was time to make a decision about my future.. College, yikes! I was so nervous, how was I going to choose the right college for me? They walked me through theses steps and low and behold I choose the college I'm going to!
In conclusion, if you have a hard decision you can take the simple steps that Denise tells about in her article to help you make the right choice.

In a recent article by Kathy Kristof entitled, "Fake student loan site steals identities"
she informs readers of how fake student loan sites are attempting to steal the identities of students, and warns them to be careful in giving out information.
Kathy Kristof states, "Fake accounts for student lending giant Sallie Mae are popping up all over Instagram in an attempt to steal student identities, according to Scambook, a website dedicated to detecting bogus sites and warning consumers about using them." Students are basically going to believe anything and if you're there to "help them" then they are going to be vulnerable. Students are wiling to give their personal information, the most important thing ever, to anybody who will help because for most that is what their parents do for most of their life and they are not used to not being able to rely on the fact that there is a safety net there to catch them when they mess up.
Kathy, an online article writer, mentions that, "Another option is for people to start monitoring their credit report at annualcreditreport.com. This site provides one free credit report from each of the three credit bureaus each year. That gives you access to three reports each year (one from each bureau)," which in turn may help students to be able to keep visual track of where they are at with their identities. Credit scores are like your GPA and the bills you pay are like test's you take for each class, and the classes you take are like the companies that you pay bills to; however, in the real world though your occupation/job is your school.
Kathy states that "students who attempt to be among the first 150,000 to take the bogus sites up on the offer are asked to provide private information, such as birth dates and Social Security Numbers, allowing the sites to steal their identities," so in other words when in doubt get out and do NOT give personal info out to just anybody. If the website seems suspicious google it and find out as much as you can through reviews about the website and take the advice given!
I made the connection that I am a senior in high school, the most important year in high school, but yet I am one of the most targeted people because of my age and I will be a college student soon and I use social media often, everyday and most of the time very multiple times a day.
Overall use common sense and do not trust just anyone because not everyone has your best interest in mind like your parents. News One article, Report: 1 in 4 Americans completing High School late, students lag behind other countries informs the reader of how the American students are falling behind because schools are not teachig the proper curriculum and how it could possibly effect the economy.
In the article it states, "America's economy will suffer if schools don't step up their game." Schools need to start teaching the curriculum students need to actually learn something and they need to start pushing the students to do better so that the student will get motivated and graduate on time, or at least not drop out.
President Obama says, "despite resources that are unmatched in anywhere in the world, we have let our grades slip, our schools crumble, our teachers quality fall short, and other nations out place us." We have resources that no other place does; however, those place with lesser resources are doing better than the American school systems? Nice job America. Why is the education of this country's future leaders not important? If the student do not get educated properly in school then the students will not do well in life after. Examples being: some won't gradate, some wont graduate on time, some wont go to college. All this runs the risk of people not being educated enough to preform a job. Less job means less money and less money mean trouble for the economy.
In the article The Commisoner wrote, "If an unfriendly foreign power had attempted to impose on America the mediocre educational performance that exists today we might well have viewed it as an act of war. As it stands, we have allowed this to happen to ourselves. How did we get into the position where the future of the economy, and the people was predicted to be a horrible outcome? What happened to the times when we fought hard for the education we deserved and wouldn't let anybody mess with it? America needs to step up, and do what needs to be done, before we reach the worst possible outcome.
Picture my 3rd grade self as the year 1955, and then picture my 12th grade self as the present day. My 3rd grade self(1955) strived to do so well in school and then we get to my 12th grade self(present day) who should be aiming to do the absolute best I can to futher my education, but just doing enough to keep from failing. I made the connection that my life over the years is like the changing educational values throught the years.
So, will the school systems ever step up and provide the curriculum needed to learn and further the education of the students so that the economy is not at a high risk? If the schools don't step up then the future of our country's economic state is at a high risk.

Book Review: The Other Side of the Island
In the book The Other Side of the Island by Allegera Goodman, everything is predectable, everybody follows the rules, every family fits right into place, except for Honor's family; everythinga bout them is wrong, they break the rules, they are wild.. and on an island were everything is predictable.. Honor's family is unperdictable..
On island 365 everything, even the weather is predectable. The skys are projected and almost always blue, the temperature is regualted by an island a few 100 miles away so the temperture is almost always hot and it hardly ever rains. How maight this be possible? well the answer is simple.. Encloser. Encloser is a system put into place to close off the island from the surrounding unpredictable world. But even in having Encloser Earth Mother cannot keep all the unpredictable weather out.. every few years or so there comes a big storm.. a hyrricane.. big enough that even Encloser cannot keep it out.
Honor always stood out. Even though she tried to be perfect like all the other girls in her class, she just couldn't do it. From the moment she was born she stood no chance of fitting in with the rest of her year.. Every year since Encloser was put into place, every child taht has been born in that year have names that start with the same letter. Since Honor was born in the 8th year and the 8th letter of the Alphabet is H, all the kids were to be named with an H. Honor's parents followed the rules.. in a way, but at the same time did not because the H in Honor is silent. Honor hated her parents for being unpredictable and tried in everyway to be nothing like them and to make everybody else believe that her parents were normal, just like thiers and that worked for awhile, until her parents had a second child. Having two kids was not allowed.. families were supposed to consit of three people, if by mistake you you have a seconds child you're supposed to give it up for adoption to somebody who was less fortunate than you and could not have a child of their own.. Honor's family did not..
After getting a brother Honor did everything she could to be as much like the other girls as she could be.. And for awhile it worked, that is until her parent wee taken. Having hr parents taken meant that Honor and her brother, QuintIlin were now orphans. Being an orphan meant that nobody would talk to you unless absolutely necessary. Even though most orphans thought their parents were dead Honor refused to believe and she would stop at nothing to find them.
I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend
it to anyone who likes a book that will keep
them on there toes.

In the article Marijuana smoking may increase stroke risk
for young adults" Ryan Jaslow of CBS news informs us of the harmful effects Marijuana may have on the body.
Ryan Jaslow states, "Marijuana may trigger strokes in young adults, according to preliminary research presented today at an international medical conference." The research done has proven that Marijuana use may not be as safe as people think. Dr. P. Alan Barber, a professor of clinical neurology at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, states,
"Cannabis has been thought by the public to be a relatively safe, although illegal substance, This study shows this might not be the case; it may lead to stroke." The way the research was gathered was by testing the stroke patients blood for weed traces. It showed that a lot of the patients had Marijuana in their system. If there is not a medical history of strokes in your faimly, Then it is more likely that smoking weed could be the problem.
Dr. Barber also states, "The researchers found 16 percent of the subjects who went to the hospital following a stroke episode had marijuana in their system." You may not think it but 16 percent is a lot. Having a storke shortly after having smoked weed raises the red flag for many who are trying to figure out if weed would be okay to make legal for recerational purposes. Also having strokes at such a young age also raises a flag and figuring that they have weed in thier system is just the futher proof they need.

Dr. Jones states, Marijuana abuse is common among sufferers of schizophrenia and recent studies have shown that the psychoactive ingredient of marijuana can induce some symptoms of schizophrenia in healthy volunteers." Meaning that Marijuana abusers are more likely to become sick with a menatal illness.
In conclusion, One could say that yes abusing weed could leasd to an increased risk of stroke, but abusing weed could also lead to increase risk of schizophrenia. Also abuse of ciggaretes could lead to lung cancer, so one could say that it is not just smoking Marijuana, it is when you abuse Marijuana that the peoblems begin.

Current Connection!!
In an aticle California School Shooting: Suspected gunman claims he targeted bullies, sheriff says CBS informs that, a 16 year old boy shot at teenagers he claimed was bullying him.
Students who were later interviwed about the shootings that had occured said that the inncident occured just a minutes after the new lock down saftey proceduers were annonced. About 10 minutes after the new saftey procedures was annonced, the school annonced that it was in lock down.. and it was not a drill. The 16 year old had planned what he was going to do and apperntly thought that the time was the best choice. Wether it be because he thought the procedures were not yet secure or the fact that he was impatient and just picked a random time is not yet determined.
The two teenagers he targeted were students who he claimed we bullying him for more that a year. The boy arrived around 9:00 am, walked into the classroom and started to fire, he later made a remark to the teacher that he did ot want to shoot him. It was not a random act he told police that he went home and thought about how to get revenge. He planned just who to shoot. He fired two rounds at the student before handing the gun over to teachers.
Students say that he was a very intelligent person. He knew excatly what he was doing and had to know that it was not the only way to get them to stop. It just goes to show what bullying can do it a person, it can just make them snap. Also the fact that he made the remark i dont want to shot you shows that he wasn't randomly doing this and that there was a resason. Wether or not he will be charged as an adult is still undetermined.
A connection to this would be the time back in 2007 when a 14 year boy was caught making plans to shoot people in his school. The 14 year old boy said he was doing it to 'get back' at the bullies and the students/teachers whom he felt were unfair towards them.
In conclusion, It is still undetermined wether or not the boy will be charged as an adult or a juvinile. The boy fired two rounds at students who were bullying him, and did not want to hurt anyone else. The boy was very intelligent and knew that what he was doing was wrong, if he felt like he was getting bullied he should have gotten help. Not taken matter into his own hands.

The American Dream Essay
The American Dream
The American Dream, something everyone’s thought about, something everyone wants to achieve. Whether they dream to achieve something personally, socially, or professionally, they cannot deny that they do not want to achieve it. My personal American Dream is that we as a country never lose the freedom that has been provided to us by our founding fathers and the soldiers who have fought for it.
Long ago our founding fathers wrote a Constitution. In the Constitution they stated that we as citizens have the right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness means that we can live the way we want, worship the way we want, talk the way we want, and do what makes us happy. It means freedom. We as a country were long ago given freedom, and as Americans we should hope to never lose it.
Although we have freedom, it is not an easy thing to keep. There have been many soldiers who have given their lives so that their loved ones would be able to be free. There are also many soldiers who have been wounded or are still fighting for our freedom. Also before we left England a person could not worship the way they wanted, live the way they wanted, and had no say in a leader, that made a lot of people angry. When our founding fathers decided to write the constitution they knew that there would be a war, and that England would try all they could to stop them from starting their own country, but people were willing to do it for hopes that they would be able to live better, they went through a lot trying to make sure that future generations would be free and not have to live like them, for hopes of not disappointing them I hope our freedom remains.
Freedom comes at a price. That price is never an easy one to pay, but many Americans are willing to make that sacrifice, to keep the freedom, the American Dream

Current Connection Living on Caffeine
The article written by Veronique Greenwood describes how scientists have recently discovered a bacterium that can derive energy by consuming caffeine, essentially making the phrase, "living on caffeine," literal.
In may scientist discovered that a new bacterium could live for several months off of just caffeine and why humans can't. In the article, Veronique Greenwood states, "it sparked many tongue-in-cheek headlines and ledes. "Bacteria survives on caffeine (like me)." "If you can’t live without a cup of coffee…" "Think you live on caffeine?" It all came down to one simple question... Why can't humans live on caffeine? Humans can't live in caffeine because while it will keep you energized and going for awhile it doesn't give off any energy so eventually you would be so tired you just couldn't go on.
Pseudomonas putida, the be bacteria, doesn't have the same problem humans do. In the article it reads "Pseudomonas putida CBB5, and several related bacteria that scientists have known about for years, who get all the calories they need from it."-[Caffeine]. The bacterium doesn't need the calories that humans need so getting just enough energy for them is alright.
Veronica states, "The specific reason caffeine isn’t an energy source for us, thus, is that we don’t have the gear to digest derivatives further." Living on on caffeine could be a total possibility if not foe the fact that our bodys are lacking in what they can digest, the new bacteria however hangs on to the caffeine and keep going going going off it.
While reading this article, I started to remember something I read in Biology about Anaerobic organism, Anaerobic organisms can live for year without oxygen, at the time there were many questions sparked about why humans can't live without oxygen.

Current Connection
In a recent article " Doping scandal costs Lance Armstrong sponsors, charity role " By Michael Pearson, CNN explains to us why Lance Armstrong is being accused of doping and losing sponsers.
Michael Pearson, a reporter for CNN, states, "In its report, released last week, the anti-doping agency made public testimony from Armstrong's teammates and others who said Armstrong was among team members who used banned performance-enhancing substances and tried to hide it from testing officials." Lance Armstrong had been a target for years. He's stayed strong and denied the accusations made against him, but is now possibly too tired of defending his name? The problem I have with the statement made above is that if his teammate has supossedly known about it all this time why wait until now? What was the point in waiting so long, if the alligations are ture then why after all these years of Lance getting away with it did his teammate decide it was time for people to know the true?
Lance Armstrongs's sponsers have been backing out because of these accusations made against him. Michael Pearson states, "Nike, which initially stood by Armstrong, dropped him Wednesday with a terse statement citing what it called "seemingly insurmountable evidence" that he participated in doping." Nike dropped Armstrong as soon as he didnt deny the alligations made by a former teammate, tell me how its right that the word of maybe ten individuals stands without proper investigations being held. If these alligations against Armstrong are false then this is probably one of the biggest disgraces of his life, think about.. Winning something that means everthing to you, then getting called a cheater having your trophies taken away, having people think bad when they hear your name? It just sounds awful.
Lance Armstrong's life is going to be forever changed because of these accusations, He is now banned from protecipating in many compitions including any events sanctioned by the U.S. Olympic governing bodies, in the article it was stated, "The report is part of USADA's request to international cycling officials to strip Armstrong of his seven Tour de France titles. The International Olympic Committee is also reviewing the evidence and could consider revoking Armstrong's bronze medal from the 2000 Sydney games. Armstrong is already banned from competing in events sanctioned by U.S. Olympic governing bodies." I don't know what's worse having people believe you're a cheater or not being able to do what you love because of it. Armstrong's principles are being questions, people who once thought Armstrong to be inspriational, a hero are now wondering if he shoould be known as such a thing.
As I was reading this article my mind started to wonder back to when Manny Pacquiao, A boxer, was accused of taking steriods. Manny Pacquiao was constantly being accused and put down for "using" just like Lance is now. Manny lost sponsers and he also lost the titles he won because of the accusations.

World Trade Center Reborn
Rebuilding 1 of the world trade centers is a risky thing to do because of the messages that it sends to the people that once destroyed it. Rebuilding send the message "We're not scared of what you think." But prehaphs we are scared that things will take a turn for the worst and something like the tragic event of September 11, 2001 will re-occur so it is best to take many safety precautions. 71 elevators are being built into the 1 WTC 5 of which are high speed express cars moving at 2,000 feet per minute or 23 Mph. The best reason for these elevators is that they can get from top to bottom in 45 seconds so if anything horrific were to happen alot of people could get out in a little time. What about fire? 450,000 gallons of water, which is enough to fill all the pipes in 50 Empire State Buildings to capacity 50X is how much water is going to be in the 1 WTC. The concrete can withstand almost 3 times as much as the other skyscrapers in NYC, that would help alot if there were to be an obect fly/drive/hit the building.

Katy's Reading Bucket List
1. Thirteen Reasons Why- by Jay Asher: A friend of mine, recommended this book to me. I really want to read this book because it seems like something tha would keep me interested. I also want to read this because i've heard that it might be made into a movie and i like to read the books before I watch the movies.
2.The Outsiders.- by S.E. Hinton: In English last year we got to watch the movie. I really liked the movie and everyone says if i enjoyed the movie that much that I simply must read the book because its so much better.
3. Mocking Jay.- by Suzanne Collins: The Mocking Jay is the last book in the series The Hunger Games. I absolutly loved the first two books and simply can't wait to read the last. People say that the first two are better so I cannot wait to find out for myself.
4. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.- by J.K. Rowling: This book is the sixth book in the Harry Potter series, there are seven books all together. I want to read this book because I have read the first five books and I really enjoyed them. I also want to read this book because I have all the movies and I want to see how closely they follow with the books.
5. I am Number Four.- by Pittacus Lore: I went and saw this movie in theaters when i didn't know that it was a book after the movie my friend asked if i liked how it followed with the book i was like there's a book? what? Now i want to read the book, and then re watch the movie.
6. The Fault in Our Stars.-John Green: The first time i heard about this book was in my English 11 class with Mrs. Gillmore. We watched a video about it and it looks interesting, it also comes highly recommened.
7. The Perks of Being A Wallflower.- by Stephen Chbosky: I watched the movie trailer to this and it looked awesome!! I like what the book talks about and i also like to read the book before I watch the movie.
8. To Kill a Mockingbird.- by Harper Lee: This book has been highly recommended to me by several of my friends. I watched the movie in the 9th grade and I realy enjoyed it. My English teacher, told me that the details in the book were so much better and that as much as I like to read I would enjoy it.
9. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.- by Rick Rordan: A few weeks ago my little brother asked me if I would watch a movie with him I said Yes. I really enjoyed the movie and then he started talking about the differences between the book and the movie. I didn;t know that it was a book before I watched the movie so now I want to read that series and then re-watch the movie.
10. Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children.- by Ransom Riggs I watched a book trailer for this book in Mrs. Gillmores class, I really liked the trailer and the book sounded really intersting.

"The Unsinkable Ship"
I was awoken by the pounding on the door, My Father talked to the man at the door with a worried voice he looked at my mother with disbelieving eyes. "The Titanic's been hit" he said. He had said it so quietly i had to strain to hear, but mother had heard she said "How..How could this be?" They had told us the ship was unsinkable..and as a child I couldn't understand why everyone seemed so worried. Mother rushed me out of the room and towards the deck when we got there Mother and I were put into boats along with other women and children but Father.. Where was Father? I asked Mother and she said that Father couldn't come with us and then we were in the water..and I never saw Father again. Mother forgave Captain Smith and the Captain of the other boat.. But I.. I never forgave them. How could I forgive a Captain that kept going even though he'd been warned several times?.. Just to save his own job. I never forgave the Captain of the boat nineteen miles away for ignoring the distress signals that could of saved the lives of many more people..possibly even father.. I still don't see how Mother could forgive those people for the terrible things they had done..because of them she lost her husband and I lost my Father.

Pity
"He sought my pity, but had he any right to pity? Did a man of his kind deserve any pity?"
I think that the dying S.S. Solider deserve pity becaise he know (even if it might be to late) that what he did was wrong. In the book it says "His thoughts were once again centered on himself and he was filled woth self-pity." I think that while yes the man did pity himself because he was dying at such a young age he was truely trying to ask for the jews forgiveness. I also think that the solider was trying to get the pity of someone else so that he could feel as thoigh someone forgave him and could die in peace.

I also think that the solider was trying to get the pity of someone else so that he could feel as thoigh someone forgave him and could die in peace.

Forgiveness
Forgiveness is not an easy thing to give. However I do belive that every person should be able to get forgiveness no matter how bad their deeds may have been. A man kills his best friend to save him from an angry mob, Maybe the man killed his best friend so he would know that he wouldn't have to suffer, like the mob would have made him.
